Day 3: Hanoi - Mu Cang Chai
From the capital, the long drive transitions from the bustling urban sprawl and plains of the Red River Delta into the provincial hubs of the midlands before the landscape ascends into the mountains. En-route stop for a local style lunch at a delightful lodge.
From here, the road is scenic, passing rice valleys, rice terraces and various types of tropical plantations before heading to Mu Cang Chai through the steep Khau Pha pass, marking the beginning of the ‘Photographer's Road’.
On arrival check into the Garrya Mu Cang Chai, a creatively designed lodge offers panoramic views of the surrounding rice terraces. The location is unique, encompassing a small hill. As a Banyan Group brand, it blends "beauty in simplicity" ethos with a focus on design sustainability, through natural materials as well as the employment of locals.
Rest of the afternoon, rest at leisure at The Garrya.Day 4: Mu Cang Chai
After breakfast at the hotel, head to La Pan Tan village located at over 1250 m altitude and inhabited by Hmong hill tribe group who built endless rice terraces over 700 hectares carved over centuries
Begins with a 5 km trek to Mam Xoi Hill, where centuries-old rice terraces remain meticulously carved into the mountainside. Following the ridges of the valley, the route leads to a traditional Hmong village for insight into a way of local life. The Hmong population in Vietnam is estimated to be approximately 1.45 million people, making them the fourth-largest hill tribe group in the country.
Many residents in this area continue to wear hand-dyed indigo clothing with colorful head scarves and reside in classic wooden cottages, maintaining a lifestyle deeply connected to the seasonal rhythms of the land.
Return to the hotel in the early afternoon. Rest of the day and evening at leisure.Day 5: Kim Noi Village
After breakfast, head to the Kim Noi village located high in the mountains, on the way you will follow parts of the road of the Photographer's Road and see countless rice terraces. Upon arrival in Kim Noi, start to walk downhill through majestic rice terraces, enjoy some of the best views of Mu Cang Chai with a winding road going through multiple viewpoints and offering incredible views on the area.
Halfway through the trek, the landscape starts to change with more trees and slightly less rice terraces, continuing to walk downhill passing several small waterfalls until reaching a small Hmong village. The last kilometer of the trek is again on a concrete path passing a small village and going downhill for one last time through beautiful rice terraces.
Upon reaching the main road, continue on a 15 minutes steep walk uphill to reach a local Hmong house offering an authentic cultural encounter. Spend some time understanding the local culture, get to know the specificities of local architecture, listen to traditional Hmong music and participate in a batik workshop with a local Hmong woman.
Return to the hotel in the mid-afternoon. Rest of the day and evening at leisure.Day 6: Head to Sapa
Following along breakfast, head to Sapa i at around 9am along winding roads through landscapes covered by lush forests and more terraced rice fields scattered with traditional houses back to the bustling urban sprawl and plains of the Red River Delta.
