Basilicata is the stunningly beautiful and relatively undiscovered region occupying the ‘instep’ of the boot of Italy. Bordering on Campania to the west, Puglia to the north and east, and Calabria to the south, it has one short southwestern coastline on the Tyrrhenian Sea and a longer one to the southeast on the Gulf of Taranto on the Ionian Sea.
The greatest draw for visitors to Basilicata is Matera, whose distinctive Sassi – cave-like houses and churches in the heart of the town – give it a dramatic setting. The prettiest coastal area surrounds the historic town of Maratea: here you’ll find crystal clear waters secluded sea grottos.
