Henan, Shanxi and Shandong
The provinces of Henan, Shanxi and Shandong are steeped in history and home to a wealth of revered historic sites. From the modern city of Qingdao on the wild Shandong peninsula, to the Shaolin temple on Song Mountain and the ancient walled city of Pingyao, these spectacular locations along the Yellow River offer a glimpse into China’s Neolithic and medieval past and its prosperous future.
South of the Yellow River lies Henan, home to the sacred Song Mountain and the origin of Kung Fu - the Shaolin Temple. Shanxi province has been hailed as the cradle of Chinese civilisation, and where you’ll find the revered Yungyang Grottoes and the UNESCO listed walled city of Pingyao. Shanxi’s natural wonders lie further off the beaten track and include the Hutuo Waterfall and Mount Wutai. The coastal province of Shandong is the birthplace of the venerated scholar and philosopher, Confucius, and boasts a wealth of spiritual and architectural heritage amongst its wild and beautiful landscapes.
