Fly to Santiago
Day 1 - 4
  • San Pedro de Atacama, Chile

    At a Glance

Dive straight in to a Chillean desert adventure in the Atacama.  After landing in Santiago a short connecting flight will bring you to Calama.  Here you can prepare yourself to be spoilt rotten.  Staff from the exclusive and boutique Awasi Atacama will be waiting to greet and drive you to the oasis town of San Pedro. Desert dwellings don’t get much better than this; each room is assigned a private guide and vehicle to really indulge and optimise the most of your time here. Awasi is the only lodge in the area that offers all tours on a private basis as standard, meaning experiences can be especially tailored to you, away from the crowds.

Delve deep into adventure and explore the Valley of the Moon first thing in the morning by bike, a blissful time to avoid the crowds and take in the beautiful silence on top of the dunes. Discover the remote Tatio Geyser fields, watch flamingos congregate in the Altiplano lakes and enjoy some spectacular hiking in the Lejia lake highlands, not known to many so a truly unique and worthwhile adventure. Leave time to reach the stunning lagoons where you can hop in for a refreshing swim, before crossing back over beautiful sand dunes and riverbeds.  Not forgetting the abundant starry sky of the southern hemisphere, be lost in the vast galaxy above you and take in the knowledge shared by your private astrologer at the petroglyphs of Kezala.

Due to its length and topography, Chile’s north, central and southern regions have different climates: The north of Chile is a year round destination but its weather, particularly in the Atacama desert, is affected by the high altitude with temperatures fluctuating dramatically from day to night. Southern Patagonia is best visited from November to March when temperatures are milder but visitors should be prepared for strong winds and changeable weather at any time. It is worth considering travelling outside this time, especially rewarding in April (for autumn colours) or October (for spring flowers) because winds can drop significantly and there are fewer visitors in the national parks. The Central Valley enjoys a temperate Mediterranean climate from Mid-October to April with cooler temperatures and higher rainfall from May to September. The wine harvest takes place in March.
